SIM-based calling CRM: what it is and where it stops
A SIM-based calling CRM runs on the mobile phones your team already carries. Calls go out over each SIM’s own mobile plan, and an app on the phone tracks every one and files it under the right lead. Here is how that differs from cloud telephony, which teams it suits and what it cannot do.
- Customers see a real mobile number
- No per-minute charges
- Runs on Android phones

What a SIM-based calling CRM is
A calling CRM holds your leads, tells callers who to ring next, records how each call went and books the follow-up. A SIM-based one does all that without phone lines of its own: the call is an ordinary mobile call from the SIM in the caller’s phone.
That sets it apart from cloud telephony, where calls run through a provider’s network on virtual numbers you rent, and from a plain call tracker, which logs calls but has little or nothing for leads, queues and follow-ups.
LumaKol is a SIM-based calling CRM. This page uses it as the worked example, including where it falls short.
How the pieces fit together
Three parts, each with one job.
The SIM and the phone’s dialer
Place and carry the call over the mobile network. The SIM’s plan pays for the minutes, and the customer sees the caller’s own number.
The app on the phone
Reads the work SIM’s call log after each call, matches the number to a lead, asks for the outcome and books the follow-up. On Android this needs no typing.
The web dashboard
Holds the leads from your sources, the pipeline, the rules for the calling queue, reports and the live team board. Managers work here, and callers can too.
SIM-based CRM, cloud telephony and call trackers
Three common ways teams put phone calls and a CRM together.
| Question | SIM-based calling CRM | Cloud telephony with a CRM | Call tracker app |
|---|---|---|---|
| Where the call runs | Mobile network, from the caller’s SIM | The provider’s network or the internet, on virtual numbers | Mobile network, from the caller’s SIM |
| Number the customer sees | The caller’s mobile number | A virtual number rented from the provider | The caller’s mobile number |
| Calling cost | The SIM’s mobile plan, plus a per-seat fee | Per-minute or bundled charges, plus number rental | The SIM’s mobile plan, plus the tracker’s fee |
| Leads, queue and follow-ups | Built in | In whichever CRM it connects to | Mainly call logs and reports |
| Recording | Where the phone’s dialer records | All calls, on the provider’s side | Where the phone’s dialer records |
| Inbound menus and routing | None: calls ring the caller’s own phone | IVR menus, queues and routing | None |
| Setup | An app on each phone | Numbers, a provider account, often a softphone or headset | An app on each phone |
Typical setups. Products differ, and some vendors sell more than one model.
SIM-based call tracking: what the phone can tell you
Android keeps a call log for the SIMs in the phone. A SIM-based CRM reads that log, so it can track calls dialled from the phone’s own dialer and calls coming in, as well as calls started from its own app.
What it can track
- Whether the call was outgoing or incoming
- When it started and how long it lasted
- Connected, not answered, declined or voicemail
- Which SIM it was on, so personal calls can be skipped
- Which lead it was with, by matching the number
- The outcome and note the caller adds afterwards
What it cannot track
- What was said, unless the phone’s own dialer recorded the call
- iPhone calls, because iOS does not let apps read the call history
- Calls on a SIM that was not chosen as the work SIM
- Call quality, or why a call dropped
Who a SIM-based calling CRM suits
Field sales and site visits
Callers who are out most of the day already carry the phone. Making and logging a call needs no desk, headset or laptop.
Small teams starting out
One phone and one seat is enough to begin, with no numbers to rent and no lines to set up.
Leads who call back
Customers reach the same person on a number they recognise, and on Android the return call is logged on the lead too.
Teams in more than one country
Calls use local SIMs on local plans, so there is no telephony contract per country. Numbers from any country match in international format.
Owners who sell themselves
A founder, agent or consultant can track their own calls and follow-ups on the phone they already use.
When another model fits better
- Your callers mostly use iPhones, which have no automatic call logging.
- You need one shared support number with menus, queues and routing.
- You want predictive or parallel dialling for large cold lists. A SIM-based CRM places one call at a time from one phone.
- You must record all calls centrally. Dialer recording depends on the phone brand and the country.
- Callers must not show their own number to leads.
Limits to plan for
These follow from how phones and SIMs work, and they apply to LumaKol.
Automatic logging is Android only
It needs Android 10 or newer. On an iPhone, only calls started from the app are tracked.
Recording depends on the phone
LumaKol does not record calls. Where the phone’s own dialer records, the recording syncs to the call; some brands and countries do not allow it.
The number belongs to the SIM’s owner
If a caller leaves with their personal SIM, the number leaves too, and leads may keep calling it. Company-owned SIMs avoid this.
One call at a time
Each call is an ordinary mobile call with the caller on the line, so there is no parallel or predictive dialling.
Logs need data to arrive
Calls work without mobile data, but the log reaches the dashboard only once the phone is back online.
Calling rules still apply
A real mobile number does not exempt you from do-not-call rules. LumaKol checks calling hours, attempt limits and a no-contact block, but it does not check national do-not-call registers.
SIM-based calling CRM questions
Is a SIM-based calling CRM the same as a call tracker?+
No. A call tracker logs calls and reports on them. A SIM-based calling CRM also holds the leads, puts the next call in front of each caller, records the outcome and books the follow-up.
Do callers need mobile data to make calls?+
No. Calls go over the mobile network. The app needs a connection to sync calls and outcomes, and it keeps them on the phone, encrypted, until it has one.
Can callers keep personal and work calls on one phone?+
Yes, with a dual-SIM phone. The caller picks the work SIM, and calls on the other SIM are never read. On a single-SIM phone, calls with leads are tracked and calls with anyone else stay on the phone.
What about calls coming in?+
On Android, incoming and missed calls from leads on the work SIM are logged the same way as outgoing ones. There is no shared number or menu: each lead calls the caller’s own number.
Does it work outside India?+
Yes. Calls are ordinary mobile calls on any carrier, numbers from any country match in international format, and plans are priced in US dollars or Indian rupees. The Android app comes in 33 languages.
How is LumaKol priced?+
Per seat a month, from one seat, with no per-minute or setup fees. Calls are paid for by each SIM’s own mobile plan. The 14-day free trial needs no card.
