Cloud telephony or your own SIM? An honest comparison
Cloud telephony gives you virtual numbers, IVR and central recording. LumaKol keeps calls on your team’s own mobile numbers and builds the CRM around them. Which one fits depends on whether your calls are inbound or outbound, and promotional or requested.

At a glance
| At a glance | Cloud telephony | LumaKol |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A phone system in the cloud: virtual numbers, IVR, routing, recording and dialers, usually connected to a separate CRM | A calling CRM: leads, pipeline, calling queue, outcomes, follow-ups, automations and reports |
| Number the customer sees | A virtual number (landline, mobile or toll-free), or 140 and 1600 series numbers for regulated commercial calls | The agent’s own mobile number |
| What each agent needs | A browser softphone with a headset and steady internet, an app, or a call bridged to the agent’s mobile | An Android phone with the work SIM |
| Call recording | Every call, stored by the provider for a set time (3 to 12 months on the plans listed) | The phone dialer’s own recordings on Android, matched to the lead call |
| Pricing model | Per user, channel or plan, often with setup or platform fees and per-minute charges; most plans billed yearly or quarterly | Per seat a month; calls use the SIM’s own plan |
| Inbound calls | IVR, routing, queues and toll-free numbers | No shared number, IVR or routing; calls reach each agent’s own phone |
| Promotional calls in India | Promotional calls from a registered 140-series header | Not for promotional campaigns: agents’ own numbers are for calls people asked for |
| Hiding numbers | Call masking keeps agents’ and customers’ numbers private | No call masking: the lead sees the agent’s number |
Where Cloud telephony is stronger
- Inbound helplines: a shared number, IVR menus, routing and toll-free numbers.
- Every call recorded centrally, whatever phone the agent uses, with a fixed retention period.
- Call masking, so neither the agent’s nor the customer’s number is shared.
- Promotional calls from registered 140-series numbers, which an agent’s own SIM cannot provide.
- Desk-based teams on headsets, and teams on iPhone, where calls run through the provider’s app or softphone.
Where LumaKol is different
- No per-minute, per-channel or setup charges: calls use the SIM’s own plan and LumaKol is priced per seat.
- Customers see a mobile number they know, and the same person calls back.
- Calls go over the mobile network, so weak internet does not affect them.
- The CRM is built in: leads, calling queue, outcomes, follow-ups and reports in one place.
- No numbers to buy and no hardware: install the app and pick the work SIM.

Questions
Can I use LumaKol alongside cloud telephony?+
LumaKol logs calls made on the work SIM. Calls placed through a cloud telephony app or softphone over the internet are not logged, so log those in the cloud provider’s own system or its CRM integration.
Can sales teams in India call from their own SIMs?+
Calls people asked for are in a stronger position than cold calls. Since September 2026, TRAI allows commercial calls based on a customer’s enquiry for seven days from a written or digital enquiry, and promotional calls must come from registered 140-series numbers. Our India calling rules page explains more; ask your lawyer about your own case.
Which costs less?+
For outbound teams that talk a lot, usually SIM calling: there are no per-minute or per-channel charges, only each SIM’s plan and LumaKol’s per-seat price. Cloud telephony costs vary by provider and plan, so compare a real month of your own calls.
